Charles and Ray Eames, designers
Greetings:
I celebrate Charles and Ray Eames, the Los Angeles based furniture designing, movie-making pair who helped define the styles of the 1960s.
I love their inventiveness and playfulness,
But especially their commitment
To working as a couple.
The Eames:
Two designers play together,
(Even caged by their chair frames),
Serious and intentional;
Free and experimental;
Carefully building a design style.
Making new ways to sit,
To stand, to see,
To try; to do; to be.
“Powers of 10,” the film:
The idea, visual, that you remove yourself
By degrees from the known,
Finding new views,
Larger in perspective each time by 10.
Ten feet, 100 feet, 1000, 10000 . . .
Then reversing the motion,
And diving inwards by 10’s
To the smallest inner part,
Coming closer all the time
To infinite perspectives
On the whole.
